Book Review: Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed
"The most brilliant book ever written in terms of reviewing and assessing problematic issues in
human society" is all I have to say about this book. J. Diamond is so good with analyzing social
issues and he looks things from a different perspective.
Never did I know that Montana is a state full of environmental issues and economic disasters.
Mining toxic residues, commodities inflations, and dying population. Heck, the whole state has
become a giant retirement resort!! With all the rich ”seasonal residents,” the place
has become unsuitable for those who have been there for decades to live. They cannot afford
to buy from local stores because the commodity price is just too high. They cannot farm and
they cannot enjoy their quiet lifestyle anymore. His comments on modern China also
impressed me. Not too many scholars from the western world foresee the issue of China’s sickly
unbalanced development between the coastal and inland provinces. Chinese people aren’t a
friendly bunch who can stand quietly about the difference between the rich and the poor.
Based on what I’ve learned from Chinese history, I don’t think that we’ve improved a lot in
anyway. Maybe the situation will turn out to be ok in the future when the PRC do something to
close up the gap between the rich and the poor. Let’s prey for that day to come; otherwise,
having a riot across China ain’t gonna be a pretty picture showed on CNN.
Quick Facts Check: This is what’s happening right now.
Not just the U.S, but around the world, those who possess financial power can just screw those
below them and be careless about the consequences of their actions. Since my goal is to
become a successful businessman, I think I’m inherited with the possibility to make mistakes
that may hurt people around me….But I’m sure I’ll try like hell to prevent that kind of thing
from happening.
